Neurodiversity in the Workplace

This was a passion project for me as I am a firm believer that welcoming diversity starts with awareness and recognition. With an upward rise of neurodivergencies, managers and coworkers will need to understand what these divergencies look like and how neurodivergent needs can be accommodated and celebrated within the workplace.

Overview

Audience: Managers and personnel working with neurodivergent team members

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning development, Graphic Design, Prototyping

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Google Suite

This project provides an introduction to neurodiversity awareness in the workplace for managers and personnel. This module imparts the necessary knowledge required for learners to explore the common aspects of neurodiversity and better understand various neuordivegencies. More importantly, the primary objective of this learning experience is to offer the skills and confidence for the learner to think laterally about how workplace events and activities can be adjusted to allow neurodiversity to flourish within organizations.

Design

The learner is immediately presented with an introduction to neurodiversity and different types of neurodivergencies. Following the introduction, the learner has the options to take a quiz or review content before proceeding with the quiz.

Content Review: The content review allows the learner to revisit terms and neurodiversity characteristics. Flashcards and comprehension check-ins are provided in the session. The user can assess their comprehension through trial and error feedback. This learning experience uses drag and drop features, layers, states, hot spots, and variables.

Learning Check-In Quiz: The quiz reviews terminology, key concepts, and applied learning through scenario-based experiences. The quiz offers scenario-based questions which reviews different types of neurodiversity needs. Users will navigate the best course of action to support the individual needs of their team members while recognizing their neurodiversity.

Features

  • Custom visuals: To create an immersive learning experience, I developed visuals that take the learner into a workplace environment as they navigate neurodiversity needs for their team members. I designed supporting visuals for the question and answer slides by making the characters react to user responses. I sourced visual assets from an image repository and edited them in Adobe Illustrator to maintain a cohesive look.

  • Choice feedback: As the learner navigates the experience they receive feedback for their choices. When a correct answer is selected, user actions are reinforced by character reactions and feedback. If the learner chooses an incorrect response, an explanation on why their decision is incorrect as well as a visual representation in character responses is provided. Learners are prompted to try again if an incorrect response is chosen.

  • Interactivity: This learning experience offers users to experience drag and drop features, a custom slider, flashcards, and modified learning. The training provides depth in content while ensuring users feel engaged throughout the learning process.

  • e-Certificate: I used Adobe Illustrator to create an e-certificate for Neurodiversity in the Workplace. Once the learner has completed the module, the learner is prompted to type in their name and click a submit button which generates an e-certificate.
